Shoulder Dislocation Animation and Surgical Repair
by Margie Olds
In order to understand what has happened in your shoulder, it may be useful to see what your shoulder looks like from the inside. Understanding the anatomy can be helpful too, and there is a more detailed blog on shoulder anatomy to come.
These videos have kindly been provided by Len Funk, who is a shoulder surgeon in the UK. Thanks to Len, we can share this knowledge with our patients, and people are more informed about their shoulder instability.
You may wish to use these videos alongside the guided imagery and relaxation resources that are available on the website. These are currently being uploaded and will be ready early 2024.
The first video is inside a normal healthy shoulder. Take note of how shiney and smooth the surfaces are.
The second video is an animation of a HAGL lesion and the corresponding pathology that occurs inside your shoulder
The third video is an acute Bankart lesion. This is one of the most common lesions that occur with a shoulder dislocation.
The final video shows details of a Bankart repair. Note how the stitches are positioned to pull the labrum firmly back onto the bone to create a buffer for further movement of the humeral head. You can watch this video by clicking on the link here
